Miniature meditations on the imagery I notice as my life moves me around my country and the world.

Cable bundles, Austin, TX
Great hanks of thin multicolored cables (phone? fiber?) spilling out of a roadside box along an Austin street.

Abandoned cul de sacs, Dallas, TX
This development appears to have been abandoned after the roads and sidewalks went in---yet somebody is still mowing its proto-lawns.

Three-character development, Dallas, TX
Multi-lobed skeleton of a development, looking to me like three interlinked glyphs: a pi on the left, an A on the upper right, and a Bengali "e" on the bottom right.

Thoroughbred 2H Gas Well, Dallas, TX
This combination of water, bare earth, and machinery mystified me at first, making me think it might be some sort of department of transportation facility. In fact, however, a bit of sleuthing led me to discover that it is actually natural gas well named "Thoroughbred 2H."

Trinity River, Dallas, TX
Closeup into the tamed shores of the Trinity River near Dallas, and one of the long flat spans that crosses it and its flat floodplain surroundings.
Trinity River, Dallas, TX
Not far from the center of downtown Dallas, a vast undeveloped plain of parkland surrounds the Trinity River. I have no idea what it's like, but would like to visit and explore it someday, if it's open to the public.

Riding pillion, Iowa City
This guy makes sure he's got his woman riding on the motorcycle behind him. Wish I'd gotten a good picture of them in motion together through traffic, but my only quality shot was after they'd parked.
D tomato
As they aged and softened, these tomatoes started picking up the imprints of their storage container, including this perfect print of the letter "D".

Vieques, Puerto Rico
The island of Vieques in silhouette, halfway between the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Once a US Navy bombing range, it is not primarily wildlife reserve.

Caneel Bay pathway at night
Low night lights along a pathway in Caneel Bay, St John, since devastated by the Irma/Maria one-two punch of hurricanes.
Miami beach at night
One last shot of Miami beach: a night view of the shining white beach from a flight on another trip.

Boardwalk, Miami Beach
This long, long boardwalk runs parallel to the ocean in Miami Beach, dividing condos from sand and surf. I found it a wonderful place to wander and take in the sights and the fresh air.

Golden mammoth, Miami Beach
Here we have a golden mammoth skeleton in a golden case, mostly hidden within an inaccessible private garden. I'm... really unclear on what this means to the person who decided this was the appropriate decoration for this garden.
Incongruous Venus, Miami Beach
Very random-seeming imagery on construction-covering canvas sheets, including a rather incongruous Venus of Willendorf who appears to be channeling Roy Lichtenstein.

Colorful parking deck, Miami
If you've got to have bland urban structures like parking garages, you might as well paint them to be fabulous!

Underwater grid, Miami
A mystery to me about Miami bay: what are these checkerboard pattern grids that one can see underwater in some places?

Rectilinear Islands, Miami
The bay off of Miami is filled with clearly artificial islands in a variety of highly rectilinear shapes, likely built by dredging and reorganization of sand.

Sunset over Charlotte Airport
Homeward bound, sunset over the Charlotte, NC Airport, highlighting a towering not-quite-thundercloud.

Jordan Pond carriage path, Acadia Nat'l Park
From atop a different mountain (one of "The Bubbles"), looking down on the long dark form of Jordon Pond, one can see one of the carriage paths that people ride horses and bicycles upon in the park, cutting across the side of the mountain in a low rising slice of white line.

Someone's home is a castle, Acadia Nat'l Park
Looking down onto one of the private enclaves nestled on the edge of this very old park, I see that somebody's got a remarkable castle-like home perched high on a promontory by the sea.
View from the Beehive, Acadia Nat'l Park
View out over the lush green and blue landscape from the top of a wonderful little mountain called The Beehive. Acadia has the best "great view per foot of hiking" of any park I know.

Sand Beach, Acadia Nat'l Park
Sand Beach, the only really "beach-like" beach in all of Acadia National Park. Beautiful, but also often quite frightfully cold, even in the summer.

Bar Harbor, ME
Welcome to Bar Harbor, its named spelled out in shells and stones by some helpful person on this ocean-side path.

Phantasmagoria, Boston MFA
From a wonderful exhibit on what were, essentially, 18th century horror movies, projected with movable mechanical slides from a candle lantern and accompanied by live music. Here a little smiley imp banged its drum, swiveling its arm up and down as it summoned other monsters.
Phantasmagoria, Boston MFA
From a wonderful exhibit on what were, essentially, 18th century horror movies, projected with movable mechanical slides from a candle lantern and accompanied by live music. Here a laughing devil's head drifted across the screen, with staring eyes and flapping mouth.
