Miniature meditations on the imagery I notice as my life moves me around my country and the world.

Trick-or-treating Jellyfish
We pause this Hawaiian expedition for a moment of Halloween: a trick-or-treating jellyfish seen last year, its tentacles illuminated with strands of LEDs.

Beach flattener, Kahala, HI
Every morning, the sand is perfectly flat, and that is not a coincidence: flattening machines wipe out all traces of the previous day's activities, leaving nothing but their lines of raking in the sand.

Kahala Resort at dawn
Another shot of the Kahala at dawn, highlighting the criss-crossing structure of its inside-out beams.

Tropical sunrise at Kahala, HI
The sun coming up into a perfect tropical dawn. Pretty much every morning was like this at Kahala, and we embraced the time change to be able to see them all.

Menehune at work!, Honolulu, HI
The Honolulu airport, as with all airports everywhere, was under construction. I delighted in their signs, however, asking us to hang loose and chill at least as much as their iconic worker.
Flaps up for landing
Wing flaps up for landing, our airplane exposes the complex lines of its operating hydraulics (at least I assume it's still hydraulics, given that this is a middle-aged Boeing model).

West Loch Naval Magazine, Hawaii
Another part of the West Lock Naval Magazine. These more tightly packed bunkers I think might not be explosives, but much be old bomb-proof airplane hangers left over from the Second World War.
West Loch Naval Magazine, Hawaii
These great flat half-buried bunkers belong to the West Lock Naval Magazine, and are likely all still active: if the Navy decides to blow something up somewhere near the Pacific Ocean, there's a good chance the weapons were loaded out of these bunkers or their cousins.

Quonset huts, Hawaii
The semicircles of old quonset huts on a Naval base. Nearby in the jungle, bits dating back to the Second World War are still fading away.
Solar field, Ewa, Hawaii
A great field of solar panels, helping reduce the islands' dependence on distant sources of oil and gas.

Light rail, Hawaii
Amidst damp green plains on Western Oahu, this highway has a brand new light rail system strung along beside it---too new even to have yet made it onto Google Maps, but that's the East Kapolei stop at the end of the line and UH West Oahu stop just barely visible at the top. I don't know if it's even fully operational yet, but I'm happy to see it growing there.

Cluttered warehouse roof, Dallas, TX
Roof of a warehouse that is just packed with blocky white air-conditioning units. I suspect it must be a data processing center of some sort.

Complex Dallas interchange
An extremely complex highway interchange in Dallas, its structure highlighted by the quality of light and shadows at the time I shot this.

Death star lighting, CID
This lighting arrangement at the center of rays and circles makes me think of the planet-destroying ray from the Death Star.

Juncture of old and new, Eastern Iowa Airport
In the midst of ongoing renovations at the Eastern Iowa Airport, raw old concrete peeks out from beneath the illuminated curve of new facade.

Rainbow marina merry-go-round, Washington DC
Rainbow illuminated merry-go-round, apparently called "The Capital Wheel" at the end of a pier and marina in National Harbor.

Highway swirl near Washington, DC
Swirling interchange just south of Washington, DC, with the elevated portions highlighted by the different colored concrete used in the bridges.
